This course is designed to remind drivers that emergency braking equipment will maintain brakes for the tractor and trailer if the trailer is disconnected from the tractor.

After the completion of this breakaway brakes course, drivers will be able to:

  • Understand the breakaway braking system’s purpose
  • Explain how and when the trailer breakaway brakes and tractor emergency brakes will activate
  • Understand how to test the emergency braking system

  • Introduction
  • Breakaway brakes maintain your brakes if your trailer becomes disconnected from your tractor.
  • Breakaway brakes apply when air pressure drops.
  • The tractor protection valve maintains brakes for your tractor.
  • Daily vehicle inspections are required to enure these systems are working.

PASS MARK

Testing conducted throughout this online course is designed to reinforce the information presented. A mark of 80% must be achieved in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants are able to repeat the course twice if the pass mark is not achieved.
